Biography

     A native of Independence, Missouri, Taylor Comstock has been hailed as "a strong, clear tenor that stands out over a crowd." (BroadwayWorld, 2023)

     Most recently, Taylor appeared with Winter Opera St. Louis in Puccini's Manon Lescaut (Chevalier des Grieux), in which he was described as "...simply perfect...swelling with smooth power..." (BroadwayWorld, 2024). His 2023 performances of Il Trovatore (Manrico) and The Desert Song (Sid El Kar) also received wide acclaim. Earlier performance credits for Mr. Comstock include La Bohéme (Rodolfo) and L'inganno felice (Bertrando).

Pre-pandemic, Taylor was set to appear in The Crucible (Judge Danforth) with University of Kentucky Opera Theatre, and return to Opera Theatre of Saint Louis in productions of Awakenings (Leonard-Cover), Carmen, and Susannah. As a Graduate student at Kentucky, Mr. Comstock appeared in Gianni Schicchi (Rinuccio)Madama Butterfly (Pinkerton), Silent Night (Kronprinz, Nikolaus Sprink-Cover), and at Kentucky Opera in Carmen (Don José-Cover).

Taylor was a 2019 Gerdine Young Artist at Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, where he performed in RigolettoThe Marriage of Figaro, and The Coronation of Poppea (Lucano-Cover). As a 2018 Studio Artist at Wolf Trap Opera, he appeared in Idomeneo (Title Role-Cover), Roméo et Juliette, and as a Featured Soloist in WTO's "Bernstein at 100" celebration with the National Symphone Orchestra. Taylor's previous stage credits also include La Traviata (Alfredo), Il Barbiere di Siviglia (Conte d'Almaviva), Dialogues des Carmélites, and L'elisir d'amore.

In concert, Taylor most recently made his Carnegie Hall debut in April 2024 as the Tenor Soloist in Mozart's Coronation Mass, K. 317. He also performed as a Featured Soloist in October 2023 with the Vallejo Festival Orchestra in "Three Tenors! The Next Generation", where he performed arias from Aïda, Tosca, Turandot, and La Figlia di Reggimento, under the baton of Grammy Award-winning conductor Thomas Conlin. In late 2023, Mr. Comstock performed excerpts from Madama Butterfly and Turandot with Landlocked Opera (MO). Taylor also appeared in a concert/ballet adaptation of  Carmen (Don José) with Kentucky Ballet Theatre in 2019. Other concert credits include Mendelssohn's Elijah, Theofanidis' The Here and Now, Bernstein's Chichester Psalms, Brahms' Ein Deutsches Requiem, and Monteverdi's Vespro della Beata Vergine. In solo recital, Taylor has performed Liszt's Tre Sonetti di Petrarca, Vaughn-Williams' The House of Life, and Hoiby's I Have a Dream.

Taylor has taken part in vocal competitions across the United States, notably the James Toland Vocal Arts Competition (2024 Semifinalist), Jensen Foundation Vocal Competition (2024, 2023, 2022 Semifinalist), Shreveport Opera Mary Jacobs Smith Singer of the Year (2024 3rd Runner Up), Opera Mississippi John Alexander National Vocal Competition (2023 1st Place: Professional Opera), Annapolis Opera Vocal Competition (2022 Semifinalist), Fort Worth Opera McCammon Vocal Competition (2020 Semifinalist), and The Dallas Opera Guild Vocal Compeititon (2018 Grand Finalist). He is also a 5-time Regional Finalist at the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition (2022, 2021, 2019, 2018, 2016).

Taylor is an alumnus of the University of Kentucky (M.M. 2020, B.A. 2018), where he studied with Dr. Everett McCorvey.
